Ecoscene reviews two eco friendly holiday cards
12/1/2009 - Mindy Ruane
Holidays tend to lead to excess trash and waste. In fact, between Thanksgiving and New Years Americans waste 25% more trash than usual. From food packaging to gift wrapping to holiday greeting cards, it can be difficult to stay green while celebrating the traditions of the gift giving season. In attempt to keep my waste at a minimum, I tried two eco friendly holiday greeting card options: Green Field Paper Company and InviteSite.com.
Green Field Paper Company Grow-A-Note Cards
Overnight Delivery (+) - The cards are made using 100% post consumer pulp and the company prints all graphics using soy ink.
- The plantable holiday cards have wildflower seeds sown into the paper. After opening, the recipient can plant the entire card, which makes for a unique gift for the garden lover in your life.
- The designs on the front of the cards are both modern and attractive to appeal to a wide range of people.
- The cards are sized 4.5 x 6, blank on the inside, and come with a color coordinated envelope made from recycled materials.
- Green Field Paper Company can customize your personal or holiday greetings on these cards.
- Made in San Diego, California, the company offsets 100% of its electricity by purchasing wind energy credits.
Lost in the Mail (-) - Due to the seeds embedded in the paper, these cards are challenging to write on. My sentiments were not written as neatly or as straightly across the paper as I would have liked.
- At $3.49 per card, these are not for everyone on your list. Price per card drops, however, with a bulk deal of 25 cards for $62.50.
- I was unable to test the company claim that this card decomposes after planting and that flowers do indeed grow! Be sure to check back in the spring and I will update you on the progress.
InviteSite
Overnight Delivery (+) - These unique holiday cards are crafted to resemble a traditional Christmas tree ornament. The card comes with a raffia or satin string attached so the recipient can add your holiday greetings to their tree.
- These cards have a modern, elegant appeal.
- They are available in both 100% post consumer recycled and tree-free (recycled cotton and silk rag) paper varieties. All are printed letterpress style, using linseed oil inks.
- Cards can be customized with a personal message or left blank for you to write your own personal message.
- The ornament cards are also available in a variety of different colored papers and inks.
- All ornament cards come with an A2 sized post consumer recycled envelope.
- The bulk pricing of these cards make them a good choice for large volume needs: $1.75/50+ cards; $1.50/100+ cards; $1.35/500+ cards; etc.
- InviteSite donates all of their scrap materials to after school programs.
- Materials are sourced from Wisconsin and New York, and the cards are made in Pasadena, California.
Lost in the Mail (-)- The tree-free paper card was more fibrous in appearance and texture, which was aesthetically pleasing, but challenging to write on. It has small, slightly visible grid marks and white, luminescent wispy fibers throughout the paper.
- The minimum order for their ornament cards is 50.
The Bottom Line
I like both of these holiday cards, but for separate purposes. The Green Field Paper Company cards make a really nice personal touch for the right person. However, the ornament cards have a more modern appeal and polished look and are less expensive to purchase in larger volumes to do a "holiday mailer." Both companies have a clear commitment to sustainability and offer something different than a Hallmark card. The Green Field Paper Company cards are available on MyEarth360.com.* The InviteSite cards are available on the company's website.
*MyEarth360 did send products packaged with styrofoam. However, the company did confirm that it tries to use more eco friendly options when shippig products.
