Why We Need Wilderness

On the South Island of New Zealand, I peered over a wall of hay bales, through the dusk, to see wild yellow-eyed penguins return to their nests from the sea – both thrilled and comforted to witness exotic animals thriving in the wild.

Unfortunately, even penguins are threatened with global warming. Today Treehugger reports: "Fifty percent of the colonies of the iconic emperor penguin and 75 percent of Adelie penguin colonies face marked decline or disappearance if the global temperature is allowed to rise 2 deg C above pre-industrial levels," according to the WWF.

A similar issue of wilderness protection is under debate concerning the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the migrating caribou that need the refuge for calving. To get near the herds without ever leaving your armchair, check out Being Caribou, which Ecoscene reviewed in August.
