NBC Green Week

Happened to notice tonight that the peacock on NBC is all green - a quick trip to Uncle Google told me that NBC has dubbed this "Green Week" and has put up a fairly robust site in its honor. Am looking forward to all the green programming, which thus far seems limited to "the more you know" commercial inserts.

Have you gotten any good green tips from NBC/MSNBC this week? Tell us here.

Buzzing over greener coffee

There are many ways to green your coffee. I kick-start my day with coffee brewed in a press pot, which is more flavorful than using a drip machine, and doesn’t require a paper filter. I also buy Fair Trade beans locally roasted by Metropolis Coffee Company in Chicago.  (Ecoscene also reviewed a Fair Trade coffee provider, Higher Grounds Trading Company.)

No time to brew? You can still bring your own refillable cup to the coffee shop, request your muffin sans bag, or give your sweetened coffee a good swish instead of a swizzle.

For two coffee chains that are doing more good things to add green to your joe, read our latest review here >>

Global vs Local Trade?

Untitled Document

In the spirit of Fair Trade Month, last night I attended a local green networking event on Fair Trade, which we blogged about yesterday. An interesting question arose: what's more important – buying locally or supporting Fair Trade globally?

After all, most Fair Trade goods (coffee, tea, indigenous crafts) are imported from remote locales like China, Ghana, or Peru, incurring the obvious transportation emissions.
